Cartrett Lifestyle Session

Had the pleasure of photographing these two beautiful families, Lora, Joe & Otis and Amanda, Will and new baby Ferron a week ago in Virginia.  Lora’s backyard in rural Concord, Virginia is always the perfect backdrop for our shoots.

Cure for the common frame

I am not into having picture frames scattered all over my house, but I do love to have images of my friends and around, so to me this is a great alternative (creative & unique too)  :)

I may just do this

Check out your favorites and where they rank here!  Also check out some of my photos that made it into the issue!  :)

Marshall and I attended the reveal party last night and had a lot of fun together  Of course, we didn’t go as ourselves, we had perverted undercover name tags, and as Carlton said, “only at Creative Loafing!” Pics to come

A little bit of everything goodness.

Photos and interiors and compositions and stickers….oh MY!

This could be great for down my gallery hall….although I don’t really think it comes in seventeen feet lengths.  Hmm.  Maybe I should rethink that…but something similar…

Oh, I love this one below…

I’ve seen this one before:

I think this one below may be a winner for the hall.  It reminds me of the designs in the new parking garages Uptown that I love.  It’s also Urban, a throwback to the style my apartment complex is going for.

I need something unique, interesting, and temporary.  It has to be somewhat simple, considering the hallway is so long and rather narrow (3 feet or so) so you really never get a full on view of it.  Ideas?

There is all SORTS of great stuff here (found it from the photography, got hooked on it all):

Did he realllllly win?

Who knows, but he will be keeping the medal, according to the appeal.  It was indeed close as heck, and I’m not sure I believe he won, but you can decide for yourself.  He’s still an amazing merman.

Drooool.

The wall color, the art hanging on the ribbon, the different hues, the styling of the room.  Le sigh.  God love Anthropologie.

Time for a change

My living room (and apartment) has been dying for an upgrade.  Currently my house has no reflection of my personal style as all of my furniture was either a: given to be or b: bought at Ikea with an ex-boyfriend.  It is still cozy and homey and full of character, but none of which is my character.  That is why for the last few weeks I have been on a kick to revamp my house.  I love love love my apartment.  The history of the building (it is a renovated cotton mill), the character of the home (the walls are 17 feet tall, one of which is brick with originial, chipping paint and the ceilings are original, exposed beams) all inspired me when I first moved in, but now the clutter of lackluster furniture is getting to me.  So, in an attempt to get my home back in shape, I started several weeks ago by doing some quick sketches while on the phone with a friend (I do my best thinking on the phone ;) ) and came up with this (sorry, these are pictures, not scans, so they are a wee bit blurry):

I always said I would never purchase any more furniture from Ikea because it isn’t the best quality and is considered “disposable”.  I had made a promise to myself that everything I buy from here on out for my home will be things I absolutely love and can not live without, so that is what I am going to do…..with just a FEW Ikea pieces mixed in…considering, I just can’t live without that yellow Trollsta sideboard, and who knows how long I will be able to stand the yellow, but for now, I love it.

I don’t have much room to work within my apartment, but I do have some great existing pieces and a mother with a tremendous amount of furniture that can be recovered.  So, here is the inspiration room from Anthropologie and the plan:

I am going to sell my current sofa and love seat and replace them with a leather sofa and wing back chair.  My mother has both furniture pieces and I leather to recover the sofa, so I am going to get the shape of the sofa changed a bit and made into something with a deeper, more comfortable seat and fluffier arms, similar to the one in the picture.  The wing back chair will be covered in a print from pottery barn and will have an accompanying footstool and accent table.  Two storage ottomans will be used as coffee tables as well as extra seating.  The yellow trollsta sideboard will replace my current Ikea T.V. stand and will go flush against the south wall with my fantastical plasma on top.  The storage inside will house all of my DVDs and will help replace the storage from the current Ikea cabinet I am using.  The cabinet will also be sold and a narrow, wooden “sofa table” style desk will go in the middle of my two large living room windows with my current orange vintage slat back chair.  I love leaving my windows open, they are HUGE, so I am still opting for no window treatments.  The south window will have a comfortable bench underneath it’s sill.  The three foot wide”west” wall that divides the kitchen and refrigerator space from the rest of the living room is only 10 feet tall and will be the only wall that will be painted.  Right now I am thinking an bright, aqua blue, but it’s not final! Currently there is a dumb, broken Ikea bookshelf there.  I am have a million glass shelves and mounts from my old shop that I am going to line that blue dividing wall with and fill with my favorite books.  I love black, antique, vintage frames so I may do a cluster of several empty, large ones above my sofa, or actually put some of my own images in them.  I really love empty frames though, so we will see.  Those will come from a little bit of searching and collecting, from family basements to antique stores on Central avenue, and I will paint them black.  Those REAL Persian  rugs are OUTTA HERE!  (Sorry Mom, but you can have them) and the living room will have one or two white Berber rugs and a large, fun printed one in the kitchen.  I haven’t found any side tables that I love yet, so that is still in the works, with a few accessories, obviously.  For the most part though, I think I have it all down.  It’s just time to start getting furniture covered and sell the old stuff!I won’t go too much into the details of my bedroom, but here is the sketch I have for that.

My existing (also dumb, broken legged) queen size Ikea bed will be replaced by an amazing, wrought iron, french vintage bed frame.  It is painted gold, and where the paint is chipping, the iron is red.  It is lovely.  :)   Some new, white linens will go on it, along with some new shams for my European pillows.  Oh I love those things.  A french dressing chair in velvet will go on one side and a mirror table on the other.  I will leave my picture/mirror collage above the bed, just raise it all up a bit.  I already have my closet renovation underway…so next is the bedroom!  No plans for the bathroom yet, or the entry way or GALLERY HALL.  The gallery hall actually has me stumped again.  I could use some new runners for it, but I am not sure about the walls.  Maybe a few, small prints.  I love the work on Etsy, so maybe I can get some quirky pieces from there. So out with the old and in with the new!  I can’t wait!  I have been so wrapped up in my photography lately that I have been itching to let my inner designer back out.  You know, it’s not just color and pattern and pretty little things….it’s not decorating.  It’s design, and I love it.  Hopefully I can have some real after pictures real soon!  And if my ceilings could only old a chandelier…hmmm.  Maybe I can get rid of that ceiling fan and make it happen.  Yeahhh!

Always something more.

newness (kinda sorta, not really that new):

http://www.ashleygoodwin.tumblr.com

photoblog.  I decided that sending EVERYONE to a more personal blog may not be the best decision, so I started a photo specific blog there.  So, enjoy.  Or, of course, simply frequent my Flickr stream.  Almost the same, other than the tumblr account I have had for a while will just be more informative, photography wise.  That is all.

oh.  And I’m celebrating this Tuesday to next Tuesday due to my Creative Loafing cover this week and RAVE reviews by both my editor, Kim, and the Editor-in-Chief, Carlton.  I am SO the bomb.  Go me.  :)
